Within the current generation of emerging designers reshaping contemporary menswear, Yonghao Xie offers a design approach that emphasises gentleness, unexpected elements, and careful emotional detail. His Spring/Summer 2023 collection presents a vision of masculinity free from strict, traditional constraints, using loose-fitting garments, textured fabrics, and designs that balance tailored lines with softer elements.

Operating between craftsmanship and narrative, Xie’s garments resist static categorisation. Tailoring is loosened, elongated, and gently destabilised, resulting in a relaxed fit, extended lengths, and a construction that avoids rigid structure. Traditional formalwear codes are reworked through asymmetric cuts, such as uneven hemlines, softened shoulders for a less structured look, and widened proportions that provide a spacious, flowing silhouette. Garments shift as the body moves, adapting shape and drape. The result is not deconstruction for spectacle, but tailoring reimagined as vulnerability, where the clothing’s fluidity reflects openness and sensitivity.

Colour plays a decisive role in the collection’s emotional register. Powder blues, washed pinks, muted lilacs, creams, and gentle neutrals appear. These are interrupted by darker tonal anchors and occasional sharper accents. This restrained yet expressive palette lets the garments feel intimate rather than loud. The clothing communicates through mood instead of noise.

Fabrication further reinforces this tension. Crisp suiting cloths, which give structure, sit beside translucent layers that reveal outlines, along with softened cottons, and fluid shirtings that drape gently. Technical surfaces catch light with subtle movement. Textiles seem chosen not only for function but for psychological effect. Some are protective, others are exposed, and many exist between the two.

Prints and surface treatments are handled with equal sensitivity. Rather than dominating the silhouette, they punctuate it. For example, abstract motifs include blurred lines and patchwork shapes, tonal graphics focus on muted colour contrasts, and gestural details involve hand-drawn brushstrokes. These elements add rhythm without overwhelming form. Each element feels measured. This approach allows the collection to breathe.

Accessories complete the world Xie constructs. Bags arrive with sculptural restraint. Footwear balances utility with elegance. Jewellery-like accents act as quiet interventions rather than overt statements. These additions do not distract from the garments. Instead, they extend their narrative.

Yonghao Xie’s work is unique because it does not link strength only with toughness. Instead, his designs prove that being gentle can be powerful, that careful skill can show feeling, and that men’s fashion can express closeness while still feeling confident and authoritative.
In Xie’s designs, rebellion happens quietly and carefully, not through loud or aggressive means.
