Gio Swaby, a Bahamian visual artist, has captivated the art and fashion worlds with her innovative textile portraits celebrating Blackness and womanhood. Born in Nassau, Bahamas, Swaby’s artistic journey is deeply influenced by her heritage and personal experiences. Her mother, a seamstress, introduced her to the world of fabrics and sewing, laying the foundation for her unique artistic medium.
Before moving to Canada, Swaby pursued her passion for art by studying at the College of the Bahamas. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film, Video, and Integrated Media from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2016. She later completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at OCAD University in 2022.
Her work is characterized by vibrant, life-sized textile portraits that intricately weave together fabric and thread. By displaying the reverse side of her stitch work, Swaby reveals knots and loose ends, symbolizing the beauty of imperfection and vulnerability.
Swaby’s art is a testament to Black joy as a radical act of resistance. Her series, such as “My Hands are Clean,” “Love Letters,” “Going Out Clothes,” and “New Growth,” delve into themes of self-discovery, love, cultural identity, and the unique beauty of Black hair.
Her debut solo exhibition, “Both Sides of the Sun,” was showcased at New York’s Claire Oliver Gallery in 2021, featuring over twenty new pieces described as “love letters to Black women.”
This was followed by “Gio Swaby: Fresh Up!” at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, FL, in 2022, which later travelled to the Art Institute of Chicago in 2023.
Swaby’s work has been acquired by prestigious institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, solidifying her status as a significant contemporary artist.
In essence, Gio Swaby‘s artistry intertwines the personal and political, using the medium of textiles to craft narratives that honour and uplift Black womanhood. Her work challenges traditional boundaries, positioning her as a distinctive contemporary art and fashion voice.
